Alan Thrift

Alan commenced his conducting career in 1954 while employed by the Victorian Education Department. At that time he trained and conducted 1200 school children in a performance for the Governor-General on a visit to Ballarat, Victoria.

From 1957-1990 Alan was the Chairman of the Music Department at Avondale College and during that time he specialized in choral conducting and music education. At the College he was also the Musical Director of the Avondale Symphonic Choir, which toured New Zealand and the USA. In 1958 he conducted the first television broadcast of a choral program on Channel 9, Sydney.

In 1972 Alan completed a Masters of Music Degree from Andrews University in Michigan USA. Whilst there he was accompanist to the Andrews University Singers, Musical Director of the First Baptist Choir in Niles Michigan and Musical Director of the all male Good News Singers.

Alan has been Musical Director of the Sydney Male Choir since 1990. Under his leadership the Choir, with over 80 members, has grown to become one of the finest and most respected male voice choirs in Australia, renowned for its beautiful tonal harmony, discipline and entertainment.

The Choir, a self-funded community organization, has led the singing at every Anzac Dawn Service in Martin Place since 1930 and the Choir performs regularly within Sydney and its environs, with frequent visits to regional NSW. It has represented Australia internationally in the United Kingdom, Canada, the USA, New Zealand, Ireland and Wales.
