Special Notices for the Singing competition

  1. 1. A copy of the music must be provided for the Adjudicator with the first bar of each system numbered;
  2. Music must also be provided for the Official Accompanist one week prior to competition, if the services of the accompanist are required;
  3. No entrant may render the same item in more than one section of this Division in the same year; (this also applies to the National Aria).
  4. Entrants should pay particular attention to neatness of appearance when appearing on stage, as the adjudicator may take this into consideration;
  5. Costume may be worn in music theatre sections. In these sections emphasis will be placed on characterisation of role;
  6. Entrants will be required to announce the name of their song, the name of any larger work it is taken from, and its composer;
  7. A section may be cancelled if three or fewer entries are received. In that case entry fees will be refunded;
  8. Singing out of session will be allowed only in the compulsory sections for the National Aria Competition. This will be allowed only in extenuating circumstances and permission will be granted at the sole discretion of the Artistic Advisor.
  9. Time-Limited Sections. Please Note: Timing commences when the introduction commences.
  10. The General Rules and Conditions of Entry included in the back of this syllabus also apply to the Singing Competitions.

Special Definitions for the Singing Competitions

Classical Songs are songs that belong to the educated European tradition that includes such forms as art song, chamber music, opera, as distinguished from folk or popular music or jazz.

Folk Songs are traditional songs from any country.  They may be sung in the language of the country of origin, with or without accompaniment.

Music Theatre Songs include songs from any musical stage production or film.

Popular Songs are songs that have been widely circulated and commercially promoted as such.  They do not include songs from Music Theatre.

The National Operatic Aria Competition 2008

Purpose
The purpose of the competition is to assist prize winners to further their singing studies.  In the case of the first prize winner this is to be directed towards studies overseas.

Eligibility
The competition is open to Australian and New Zealand citizens.  Competitors must be between the ages of 20 and 32 years of age on the date of the competition.  Previous winners of the National Operatic Aria Competition are not eligible to compete again in this section.

Conditions
National Operatic Aria Competition entrants must also enter the Solo from Oratorio or Sacred Cantata Section (V002) and at least one of the following:
  1. Australian Composer (V003);
  2. French Mélodie (V006); or
  3. German Lieder or Balladen (V007) sections.

Performances in these sections, whilst a prerequisite for the competition, will not count towards selection as a finalist. N.B. Entry numbers may necessitate the scheduling of one or more pre-requisite sections late Thursday.

Competition
  1. The competition will include a set of heats from which six finalists will be selected.
  2. The order in which the entrants sing in the final will be determined by ballot.
  3. Entrants are required to perform in the heats at the date and time specified.
  4. Finalists will be required to attend an interview conducted by the Adjudication Panel on the day of the final.

Venue
Heats will be held at Hughes Baptist Church, Groom Street, Hughes.
The Final will be held in Llewellyn Hall, School of Music, ANU,Childers Street, Acton

Dress
Formal is Preferred

Choice of Aria

  1. Three arias of own choice from different operas are required.  Preceding recitatives, if any, must also be sung.
  2. Arias must be sung in the original key and the original language.
  3. Each aria shall be limited to a period of eight minutes including recitative, if any.  The adjudicators may ring a bell on the expiry of this period.  Long instrumental preludes or interludes should be curtailed.
  4. Each competitor will sing one aria for the heats.  Finalists will be required to sing this aria again, together with a second prepared aria chosen by the Adjudication Panel.
Music
  1. Official accompanist(s) will be available. See website for details.
  2. If the services of an official accompanist are required, a copy of all the music must be supplied to the accompanist at least two weeks before the beginning of the National Operatic Aria Competition.
  3. c) The names of all arias to be performed must be forwarded to Singing Division, The Australian National Eisteddfod Society, c/- ANATS, PO Box 5719, LYONS ACT 2606 2 weeks before the heats. There may not be any changes in the arias to be sung after that date.
  4. Copies of the arias for the adjudicator's perusal must be handed in at the Music Secretary's table, at least one section ahead of the time of the heats.

National Operatic Aria
Heats – Saturday 6 September 2008
Final – Sunday 7 September 2008 2:30pm.
Three arias of own choice from different operas
Time Limit: 8 minutes per aria.
One aria of own choice to be performed in heats. Finalists will sing two arias, – the aria sung in the heats, and a second one to be chosen by adjudicators following announcement of finalists.
Contestants must provide a 150 word biography for inclusion in the program for the Final. THE BIOGRAPHY MUST ACCOMPANY THE ENTRY FORM.
Entrants must also enter and compete in section V002, and one of sections V003, V006 or V007. N.B. Entry numbers may necessitate the scheduling of one or more pre-requisite sections on Thursday.
