Special Definitions for the Singing Competitions
Classical Songs are songs that belong to the educated European tradition that includes such forms as art song, chamber music, opera, as distinguished from folk or popular music or jazz.
Folk Songs are traditional songs from any country. They may be sung in the language of the country of origin, with or without accompaniment.
Music Theatre Songs include songs from any musical stage production or film.
Popular Songs are songs that have been widely circulated and commercially promoted as such. They do not include songs from Music Theatre.The National Operatic Aria Competition 2008
Purpose
The purpose of the competition is to assist prize winners to further their
singing studies. In the case of the first prize winner this is to be directed
towards studies overseas.
Eligibility
The competition is open to Australian and New Zealand citizens.
Competitors must be between the ages of 20 and 32 years of age on the date of
the competition. Previous winners of the National Operatic Aria Competition
are not eligible to compete again in this section.
Performances in these sections, whilst a prerequisite for the competition, will not count towards selection as a finalist. N.B. Entry numbers may necessitate the scheduling of one or more pre-requisite sections late Thursday.
